Poetry is a prayer;
A silent offering that lets
Inspiration sweep through
The soul-
An adrenaline rush
Of wisdom,
Of wit,
Of worded awe.

Sought in the dark
With trembling fingers
Touching the black nothingness
Of despair-
It seeps into the void
Of flesh,
Of floundering,
Of failure.

Poetry is the single ray of light
Penetrating the impenetrable darkness;
Yet it is also the shadows
Breathed into existence
By the single ray.
It is encompassing
Yet a tiny sliver of hope.

Poetry is the flame
On the red tip of a cigarette
Lusted nicotine-
Falling onto the forest timber
A sparking,
A spreading,
A sun-burst!

Poetry is everything
And poetry is nothing-
For nothing to exist
There need be existence.

Poetry. One of the few constants of my life, it has been the anchor to my somewhat sanity for 16 years. While I was in South Carolina for Senoir Week Vacation I wrote a few poems about poetry. Hope you enjoy it as much as I enjoyed writting it. Or more. :p

I really enjoyed this poem. Your grasp of imagery and using the tempo of your words to accentuate that imagery especially stood out. I notice that in your first line you use simile "Poetry is like a prayer" whereas the rest of the poem switches to metaphore "poetry is the flame". If it were me, I would change the first line to metaphore "Poetry is a prayer" just for consistency, also I think it improves the flow a little bit. Still this is a great poem!

Thank you so much for the feedback! I will definately consider that.

Excellent. Immediate :+fav:.

Only objection, and perhaps it's stylistic, was "penetrating the impenetrable darkness." I prefer to use paradox for other purposes; for an image like this I'd go with "lancing the forbidding darkness" or "braving the unfathomable darkness" or something.

Check my gallery for "Love In Three Acts" for my treatment of the congruence of sex, prayer, and poetry. I think we may share some common ground in our conception of creativity.

And thank you for your insight. That was a very tricky line.

If poetry is a the flame on the red tip of a cigarette, the poet is just a lipstick stain on the filter.

I know that really isnt in keeping with the spirit of the poem but then I found this poem very inspiring. Makes me want to run off and write as soon as possible! I also like the word "sliver"...

I really like this, especially the contrasts you conjure, and the paradox at the end is very good. Well-written!
